Dependence and addiction are complex phenomena that profoundly affect many people. My experience, having overcome an alcohol addiction only to become dependent on coffee and nicotine, aptly illustrates how addiction is often a shift from one substance or behavior to another, rather than a total elimination of the underlying tendency to dependence.
