(Devinus) Vanitas 2021 - 2024

A still-life painting of a 17th-century Dutch genre containing symbols of death or change as a reminder of their inevitability.  (source : Oxford Languages)

With skulls, extinguished candles, wilted flowers, soap bubbles, perished books, musical instruments, clocks or fallen glasses, the vanity, temporality and meaninglessness of the earthly is visualised.

The skull, traditionally associated with death and the past, represented as the seat of the mind, a repository of memories that cannot be erased. The darkness that whispers symbolises the subtle but constant influence of the past, shaping and possibly even overshadowing the present.
